Music Theory Courses

Why music theory?

Learning music theory is accessible and enjoyable! If you play an instrument, you have already been learning basic music theory. And chances are, your private teacher would like to spend more time working on it.

This intermediate music theory course will deepen your music understanding and improve both your ear and reading skills. The small class size of 4-8 students allows you to get personalized instruction and take your musicianship to the next level.

Will it be too hard?

To take an intermediate class, you must already know the notes on the staff (A, B, C, etc.) and the rhythmic values (whole, half, quarter, etc.). You should be familiar with the idea of key signatures and chords.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then let’s talk about doing a beginner’s theory class. Let me know in the form below!

Will it be too easy?

Do you know about chord progressions and harmonization? How about form analysis? Can you identify the meter when you hear music? If I played a rhythm or simple melody for you, could you write it down using music notation? If not, this is the right theory class for you!

What is the commitment?

Time

Each week we have a one hour class together in my studio near Sevier Middle School. You’ll have an hour of homework between each class.

We will meet for 10 weeks each semester.

  • Semester 1: the 10 weeks of September 12 to November 18

  • Semester 2: TBD (will end in April but will also have a spring break)

Cost

Tuition for each semester is $175 and is due at or before the first class of both semesters.

There is a one time $25 materials fee for your student’s workbook and binder. This fee is due with the first semester’s tuition.

Other Important Things

Learning Materials

Each student will be provided with a spiral bound workbook and a customized binder that contains extra printed learning activities. Since aural skills is an important component of music learning, you will also be given access to online ear training activities for homework.

Punctuality

Class will begin when the bell rings! Okay, there’s no bell in my studio, but it’s important for us to start and end on time. Please arrive 5 minutes prior to class so that you don’t miss anything. (My studio is near Sevier Middle School.)

Grading

I take my music classes very seriously and expect my students to do the same. However, in an effort to keep this course simple for all involved, no grades will be assigned. If your student needs a music grade for reporting purposes, let’s have a conversation about it.

Other Family Members

My current studio is small and cannot accommodate many additional family members who might be participating in the family taxi services. There may be seating for a few parents who would like to observe the class, but a dropoff scenario is more ideal. Parents are welcome to remain in their vehicles parked outside the studio during class time.

Sign Up or Express Interest

Expressing interest is not a commitment on your part, but it does help me make a tentative plan since class size is limited. Course times will be finalized and parents notified by summer 2022.
